The Micro Loop
I was a long time holdout when it came to switching to a micro leader system. I wasn’t a fan of the lack of versatility, but I couldn’t argue the effectiveness for nymphing. When I finally switched over I struggled to find a good way to connect it to my euro line. Any method I tried was either too clunky, too unreliable, or too slow to retie in the event of a break off.
Enter the micro loop. This method was introduced to me by my teammate Devin Olsen via a video a few years back. At first I didn’t believe it would be low profile or strong enough, but once I tried it I immediately realized it was the solution I was looking for. It did take me a few months to gain full confidence in it, but I have never had a single issue with it failing.
The micro loop connection is pretty durable. I get a solid three to six months out of mine, depending on how much I fish it. Luckily, they end up fraying to the point you can’t get the leader through way before they would ever fully fail, so you don’t have to worry much about surprise breakages.
I connect my leaders to the loops via a six turn clinch knot. I like this knot because it sits straight inline and doesn’t hinge as heavily while casting. I have some friends that use a double davey, which is a bit stronger and lower profile, but kicks a bit to the side.
Everything you need to know to tie the micro loop is up there in the video, and explained much better than I could write it down. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out or drop a comment!
Good luck out there!
