The Simple CDC Caddis is one of the most versatile and dependable dry flies in my box, and the only caddis pattern I carry year-round. I first picked up this pattern in 2019 while competing at the World Youth Fly Fishing Championships in the Czech Republic, where it quickly proved its worth on the Vltava River. With some of the most surface-oriented trout I’ve ever encountered, having a realistic and effective caddis imitation was key to our success that year. Since then, it’s become a staple in my box and has caught fish for me in a wide variety of conditions and fisheries around the world.
What makes this fly so effective is its simplicity. It features a Superfine dry fly dubbing body, which can be tied in just about any color, a natural CDC wing, a sighter post for visibility, and a CDC thorax. The CDC provides subtle movement on the water while creating a realistic silhouette when viewed from below. It’s a simple combination of materials that creates a remarkably lifelike caddis imitation.
Whether you’re fishing technical trout on a spring creek, targeting opportunistic brooks, or prospecting a larger river, the Simple CDC Caddis is tough to beat. Tie up a few in different colors and sizes, and you may find yourself reaching for this pattern more than any other caddis in your box!
